In less than three weeks the next event on the Seniors Tour will be underway in Spain. Three former Ryder Cup captains will head the strong field.
The entry list for the event has now closed for the Son Gual Seniors Open 8th-10th May and some great players are expected to be competing. Former Ryder Cup Captains Ian Woosnam, Mark James and Sam Torrance will continue their battle for the order of merit title and will head the strong field worth 300,000 euros. Making his first appearance of the year will be all time Senior Tour money winner Carl Mason, who will be hoping for a fast start in an attempt to add to the three John Jacobs Trophies he has won for topping the order of merit. Peter Mitchell, who won three events last season, will also be dusting off the clubs and travelling to Spain. The talented player, who showed tremendous bravery last June managing to win the Wales Senior Open in a thrilling head to head battle against Ian Woosnam, has an outside chance after a quiet winter. Seniors PlayersMany former Ryder cup players are competing in the event including the charismatic Italian Costantino Rocca and Gordon J Brand of England, who finished runner up in the 2008 order of merit behind Ian Woosnam. One particular player to watch is Angel Franco, after two good finishes already this season in Brunei and Barbados he is bound to go close. The long hitting player from Paraguay will undoubtedly win this year and it could well be his week. Senior Tour RookieMaking his first appearance on the Seniors Tour in the Son Gual Open is Roger Chapman a veteran of the main tour having played over 500 tournaments. He has been honing his game on the Jamega Tour in England and a seven under par 65 in the second round at Forest Hills recently shows he has lost none of his competitive edge. This strong field will play the Son Gual event over the Thomas Himmel designed golf course, which is owned by the Pamer family from Germany. The Langer Sport Marketing Company are managing and promoting the tournament in Spain. For full results and live scoring go to www.Europeantour.com.
