Jamega Tour News Senior Pros CompetePGA Senior Experience to Combat Powerful Young Golf Pros
With a reduction in the amount of events on the Seniors Tour, senior pros are looking for competition against the young pros on the Jamega tour.
Five years ago Tony Jones and Gary Harris started up the Jamega Golf Tour, based in South England, predominately for young pros without playing opportunities. Over the last few seasons it has grown in size and reputation and now attracts fields of over a hundred top class golfers. PGA Senior Pros – Will Experience Count? The next event on the Jamega Tour, at the Vale of Glamorgan Golf Club, finds three Senior Pros vying for the first prize, and it will be interesting to see if their greater experience can overcome the power of the younger players. Nick Job, now in his fifty-ninth year, has consistently finished high up on the European Seniors Tour order of merit and is expected to give the younger pros a good run for their money. And indeed it is their money as the Jamega Tour is not sponsored and the pros play for their own funds. Currently, the entry fee is $200, which is put in the kitty and distributed to the top twenty players. The three Senior Pros playing are Nick Job, Matt Briggs and Roger Chapman, a veteran of the European Tour having played in over 500 events. In his rookie year he is using the event as a warm up for his first event on the PGA European Seniors Tour, which is the Son Gual Seniors Open in Mallorca 8th-10th May. With at least ninety years of competitive golf between the three they should be able to find a way to finish high up, even though the course will be set at full length. Young Golf Pros they have to BeatWith an outstanding performance in the last event, finishing an impressive eleven under par at Forest Hills Golf Club, John le Roux is certain to feature, as will power players Martin Sell and the ever-improving Steve Surry. Transforming his game over the last three years, twenty six year old Steve Surry is the main contender and is potentially full European Tour material. Brought up in the era of Tiger Woods, these young players have learned not to back off when the going gets tough and the scoring is bound to be low. However, the three senior pros have played against powerful golfers before and will not be fazed when out hit off the tee. If their short games are in good shape, and they putt well, they will get close to out scoring their younger adversaries.
